Weatherization testing involves simulating natural elements like sun, wind, rain and more to determine how well component parts can stand up to these conditions over time. At our JELD-WEN Research and Development lab, the team tests both through a natural weatherization process and an accelerated process using a chamber to mimic long-term weather effects.
Natural weathering test
Jason Dassel, Research and Development lab manager, explained, "Products like cladding windows undergo extensive field weathering tests, which can take 5 to 10 years in harsh environments like South Florida or Arizona. However, to expedite the process and ensure timely results, we utilize accelerated weathering chambers. These chambers simulate years of weather exposure in a fraction of the time, adhering to industry standards and ensuring our components meet the highest performance criteria."
The accelerated weathering process involves exposing components to cycles of UV light, heat, and moisture to mimic real-world conditions. "We use chambers that replicate the effects of sun, rain, and temperature fluctuations," Jason added. "This allows us to predict how our components will perform over time and make necessary adjustments to improve durability."
JELD-WEN operates large and advanced R&D labs. "We conduct our own validation testing to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our components. This internal testing capability sets us apart, providing an extra layer of assurance to our customers," Jason emphasized.
